Batticaloa is a land unto itself. Found along the island’s Eastern part, her breathtaking scenery and rich history make for an experience that is unparalleled. In this encounter, we explore one of the locale’s rural villages, its spotless beaches, the main livelihood of its people, and several sites of immense religious significance. We take in the village on bicycle first, cycling at a relaxed pace through the famed beaches here, the small lanes and alleyways, and the many hidden treasures found in the neighbouring villages. A cycle ride of between 20 to 25km can be taken in if you like.
On entering the village, the warmth of its inhabitants is felt immediately. They’ll welcome you with open arms, inviting you into the home of one of the local families. Here, you’ll set off on a culinary journey the likes of which you are unlikely to experience elsewhere, introducing you to the unique flavours of traditional Batticaloa food. We move next to a traditional crafts affair, where we’ll meet the craftswomen who expertly weave beautiful baskets and boxes out of palmyrah leaves. The leaves are obtained from the palmyrah palm, found abundantly in this region. We’ll make our way thereafter to several Hindu Kovils and Buddhist Temples of great religious importance to all the island’s people. Here, you’ll get to observe unique spiritual traditions and rituals practiced, up close. They are sure to leave you transformed.
We’ll head to Unnichai next, a series of rural villages renowned for their agricultural efforts. Here, we’ll experience first-hand the farmers tending to verdant paddy fields and organic vegetable gardens. Assist them as they engage in numerous daily activities revolving around their livelihood of farming. The famous Unnichai tank is found alongside the village, and you can set off on a traditional fishing boat with one of the local boatmen to take in its vastness. You can opt for a leisurely stroll, allowing you to absorb the simple beauty of the villagers’ daily routines and sight a pond that remains hidden. During your walk, you’ll come across buffaloes, grazing cattle, and wild birds, who are part and parcel of this environment.
The experience closes with an opportunity to scale Kudumbimalai, a large rock formation that stands 1,750 ft high. Hiking to the top is well worth it, affording you a panoramic view of the unique surrounding landscape.
