Etili Village in Puttalam is the setting for this rural encounter. Traditional agriculture in its various forms is the main livelihood in these parts, amply seen during the course of this experience. The native ‘Chena cultivation’, a type of slash-and-burn agriculture, is displayed to you in full. Enter the chenas and paddy fields and assist the village-folk with their daily activities.
We move to a garden estate thereafter. Extending over an area of 36 acres, 19 of them are used for organic farming. A long-practiced tradition, you’ll get to absorb the many intricacies of rural organic farming as you walk through the estate. A number of authentic farming-related activities can be experienced.
The village here is surrounded by a wildlife preserve, allowing you to spot elephants, peacocks, and monkeys in the distance. A natural lake adds to the scenic beauty of this place, and it is frequented by numerous bird and reptile species. Take a boat journey around this stunning lake and leisurely absorb the breathtaking scenery and sights.
Etili Village is renowned for its eco-friendly ways as well as its embracing of ecotourism. The village takes in volunteers who wish to actively involve themselves in supporting such efforts.
This village experience also features an exploration of the unique food fare of the region. You’ll get a chance to help in the preparation of a traditional meal, and then savour it later in this setting of unmatched purity.
