This episode is centered around Mandaram Nuwara, a tiny mist-shrouded village at the base of Pidurutalagala mountain in central Sri Lanka. Like the shadow of the surrounding mountain giants that fall upon it, and its mist-clad nature for most of the day, the village’s history remains wrapped in legends and myths dating back to the period of King Ravana’s reign. The scenery and landscape here are stunning, allowing you to experience nature’s purity up close.
Approximately 2km from Mandaram Nuwara is the Kolapathana Ella waterfall, where we’re headed to next. What’s intriguing here is that it is the second fall or cascade of the much grander and larger Athinni Vatuna Ella.
We’ll head right to the village of Mandaram Nuwara thereafter. You are in for a one-of-a-kind native experience here. You’ll feel the immense warmth of the people at once. Friendly and hospitable, the village folk here lead simple lives producing treacle and jaggery, using the sap extracted from the flower of the ‘Kitul Palm’. Paddy is the main crop cultivated here, and tea fields are also seen spread across the hilly terrain. A variety of local fruits and vegetables are also grown, and you can immerse yourself wholly in village life and help them as the locals engage in farming work. Nature’s harvest is abundant, and we’ll use what’s grown right here in preparing a meal comprising village fare. Share in their culinary traditions, assist in cooking the meal, and take in a meal like no other in this most authentic setting.
