Covering some of the central highlands’ rares sites and attractions, the Narangamuwa Village experience starts off with a hike through a scenic trail leading up to Manigala Ridge. The Riverston mountains and river valley to one side, and the mountainside forest patches of the Knuckles Conservation Forest on the other, you’ll begin to realise why this island paradise is loved by so many. On a clear day, this trail affords stunning views of the Doovili Ella Waterfall, dropping from a height of 40 meters to snake its way through the lush jungle below.
Making our way to the campsite which sits on the banks of the Thelgamu Oya, we’ll stop to take a refreshing dip in a stream of cool, clear water. The descent to Narangamuwa village runs alongside a stretch of nature that is unmatched in purity. The variety of birdlife here, some endemic to these parts, is something to behold.
The village of Narangamuwa finally reached, time will stand still. You’ll have ample opportunity to closely interact with the locals at your campsite. Absorbing their unique culture and the local food fare, the rareness of this experience starts to become apparent. Towards evening, we’ll take a leisurely walk to the Pitawala Pathana grassland. From the cliff located here, commonly referred to as Mini World’s End, a series of breathtaking views of the land beyond can be had.
This nature and culture focused experience moves on to the remote village of Meemure next. Unknown even by many of the country’s folk, this quaint village straddles Kandy and Matale Districts and sits on the Knuckles Mountain Range. Authentic in every sense of the word, its residents rely on staple crops such as pepper, cardamom, paddy and ginger to make a living and sustain themselves. Observe first-hand how the villagers live and take in their rich traditions. Cultivation of paddy is important here, and you’ll get to see a number of farming rituals including the farmers sowing the fields, cultivating the paddy using cattle, and finally harvesting it. Experience them for yourself being closely guided by the village-folk, along with their abundant warmth and kindness.
