This rural encounter affords a look at pristine natural environment, the refreshing simplicity of village life, and an intimate affair involving the island’s native folk. We start off at Rathna Ella, a waterfall of breathtaking beauty that is to be reached from nearby Hasalaka village. A trek of 2-3km will lead you to this spectacular waterfall, and a number of safe bathing spots are found around it. A dip here will surely enliven the senses.
The lake here is bordered by several fishing villages, where rice farming and fishing are their main livelihoods. Take in the unique experience of fishing at this lake.
We move on to the village of Meemure thereafter. Still untouched, it is one of the remotest villages in all the isle. Found along the Knuckles Mountain Range, the village offers a close look at rich local traditions. The cultivation of paddy is central to village life, and you’ll see farmers sowing the fields, cultivating the paddy using cattle, and finally harvesting it. Experience these age old farming traditions for yourself, all the while being closely guided by the village-folk. Such warmth and kindness are rare today.
Thereafter, we’ll head to Mahiyanganaya Vedda Village. A truly special place, the village is home to descendants of the island’s native population. ‘Vedda’ translates to ‘people of the forest’, and they are said to be the rightful heirs to the soil of this land. A resilient people, they’ve persevered through centuries in preserving their unique traditions and ways of life. You’ll see how closely and harmoniously their lives are intertwined with the environment.
The experience moves to Sorabora Lake now. An ancient reservoir, you’ll be overwhelmed upon realising that this was built by human hands entirely and of the ingenuity displayed in controlling the flow of water. The natural setting here is a sight to behold, covered in full by lush foliage and boasting diverse animal life.
The village here is simplicity personified. The locals display sincere warmth and friendliness, allowing you to naturally immerse yourself in village life. The main livelihood here is rice farming, and we’ll get to visit their rice fields and observe closely how the crop is cultivated. This rural encounter closes with a first-hand cooking experience with a local family, absorbing the local culinary traditions. Thereafter, you’ll get to relish an authentic, home-cooked meal in this one-of-a-kind environment.
