Art & Philospophy

Kandy, Central Province

An experience where art and philosophy intertwine effortlessly. This one’s unlike anything you’ll find anywhere else. The hills of Kandy after sundown add to its surreal nature.

The elevated topography that characterizes Kandy’s landscape has nurtured many an artist and dancer in times past. From religious frescoes and the up-country dancing tradition that are centuries old, Sri Lanka’s hill capital has been the setting for some of the island’s best art. A refreshing glass of juice starts this one off. The veranda of your hosts’ home offers a series of breathtaking views. Inspiration flows smoothly here. The hosts are a father-daughter duo that are famed for their poignant artwork. To see their home and the work spread across its extent, is a privilege afforded to few. Home and studio blend seamlessly as you’ll see during this private experience. There is no separation between art and life for them. The sun recedes as we sit on the veranda sipping freshly brewed tea. Philosophy, music and art are discussed leisurely here as night time draws close.

The hosts’ home, their art and the philosophy behind them will stay with you for a long time.

Ideally a pair of sturdy sneakers for treks would do whilst a pair of comfy flip flops would do for excursions and sandals would be perfect for the beach or for a casual walk.
Get permission from the proper people before visiting a sacred place. This might be a caretaker, holy person, elder, or the governing agency affiliated with the site. Be aware that even after attaining permission from a governing agency you may be offending indigenous people who may not have jurisdiction over their own sacred sites.
Exchange rates fluctuate constantly throughout the week as currencies are actively traded. This pushes the price up and down, similar to other assets such as gold or stocks.
