Colombo, Western Province

A safari with a difference, here we navigate the cityscape of inner Colombo in her preferred mode of transport — the tuk tuk! There is excitement brewing beneath the surface at each stop.

Colombo Tuk-Tuk Safari: Take your senses on a safari! Colombo’s character is unique. It is nothing like its South Asian counterparts. Experience her rawness and realness in touching distance. And that too, in a typical, local tuk tuk! Sit tight; you are in for a comfortable, and at times bumpy, ride through inner Colombo. Cool drafts of air move in and out of the tuk tuk, as we make our way past streets full of activity. Religion plays a big part here, and the different places of worship sit close to each other. Large numbers of colonial and other historic sites flavour this one-of-a-kind metropolis. This experience is about 4 hours in total and it packs in a nice balance of sightseeing and food stops. This city is best known through your tastebuds! This tuk tuk experience spans places of intrigue as diverse as the Independence Memorial Hall, the streets leading to Pettah market, the Dutch Hospital Precinct, and the Sambodhi Chaithya — an elevated Buddhist shrine.

If there’s one way to take in Colombo, it has got to be in a tuk tuk! The buzz never quite leaves you after this one. Perhaps head out to one of Colombo’s trendy restaurants in the night time, after a bit of rest. We highly recommend Ministry of Crab, Monsoon and Paradise Road Gallery Cafe.

Sri Lanka is a tropical island. Therefore, breathable cotton clothing would be ideal. White is considered a clean, pure colour especially when visiting religious sites. Ideally a pair of sturdy sneakers for treks would do whilst a pair of comfy flip flops would do for excursions and sandals would be perfect for the beach or for a casual walk.
Get permission from the proper people before visiting a sacred place. This might be a caretaker, holy person, elder, or the governing agency affiliated with the site. Be aware that even after attaining permission from a governing agency you may be offending indigenous people who may not have jurisdiction over their own sacred sites.
Exchange rates fluctuate constantly throughout the week as currencies are actively traded. This pushes the price up and down, similar to other assets such as gold or stocks. The market price of a currency – how many U.S. dollars it takes to buy a Canadian dollar for example – is different than the rate you will receive from your bank when you exchange currency. Here's how exchange rates work, and how to figure out if you are getting a good deal. For the more advanced investor, you might want to check out
