Here’s a night-time street food experience where you’ll dive deep into this city’s heart. An odd mix of cuisine, all flavour-packed, there is harmony here in food. A shot of arrack — a local alcoholic drink — at a working-class watering hole sets the tone for the evening. Next, the host leads you through a few of the older streets in Colombo. The frenzy of human activity adds colour to these tightly-packed alleyways and bylanes. Ah! And then we get to Hulftsdorp Street. Her unusual local fare is a highlight of this food-centered experience. Here you’ll find everything from slow-cooked curries using off cuts of meat, or brain and intestine, to well-marinated grilled meat dishes. We grab a quick tuk tuk ride to get to Galle Face, thereafter. A beachfront promenade, it is lined with outdoor eateries serving up an interesting mix of local food inspired by the many communities that call this island home.
This experience is tailored so that you are not urged to try the food and drink you’ll encounter during it. We can’t vouchsafe the hygiene standards. But we eat this stuff all the time! So try it if it appeals to you, and you won’t be disappointed. It is the best way to absorb Colombo’s and this island’s distinct buzz.
