This rhythm and percussion centered experience starts towards late afternoon. You’ll be able to soak up the thriving tradition of local bera, or drums, from a seasoned drumming instructor. Their influence on local culture is wide.
Traditional drums have played a large part here for over 2000 years. From marriage to death, and even in times of war, the rituals and ceremonies surrounding these passages of life have, always, incorporated drums to communicate meaning. The host for this experience is a traditional teacher descending from a lineage of professional drummers. His home is about 20 minutes away from the heart of Kandy. You can take it all in at your own pace. Your teacher will carefully go over the distinct drum types, their history, and at which stage in life they’re used. A cup of Ceylon Tea adds to the mood set during this narration. Questions are always welcome, and maybe you could direct them through the interpreter provided. You’ll quickly understand, in depth, the cultural weight given to these traditional drums. You’ll get to slap the skin of these drums for a bit, along with your teach, in a fitting end to this intimate experience. The traditional headcloth drummers wear is brought out, thereafter. It is wound from a long piece of cloth and it will be amusing to try it on with your family. The host is warm and engaging. This makes this one thoroughly enjoyable and educational for children as well.
Make your way back to the hotel and relax as evening approaches. The percussive rhythms will softly ring in your head for hours afterwards.
Includes : Drumming lesson & tea. Duration : Starts at 1500 hours & ends at 1700 hours. (Approx. 2 hours) Children : Suitable for all ages. To wear/bring : Camera
